The Woes of General Musharraf (Yawn)

What high drama, an attack on Geo TV by "policemen". Geo TV, home of Hamid Mir, the centerpiece of the ISI's publicity machinery. The TV channel which happened at the right moment to be pointing the camera at exactly the right position as a suicide bomber walked up to Shaukat Aziz's car in Fatehjung. And to top it all of Hamid Mir, was "manhandled" by the police, now the fellow threatens to launch a nationwide protest by journalists.

This on top of getting a Chief Justice and half the lawyers in the country beaten up by the police.

Crore Commanders conference, Ayaz Amir, Mazdar and Cowasjee filing all sorts of nasty reports, Sethi in a panic. Hayat looking strangely at his uniform...

All this is faithfully reported by the NDTV and other friends of... in India.

Popcorn anyone?

Maverick,

I think this latest fracas is nothing more than a storm in a teacup.

Musharaff wants to remove a mere civilian judge who was proving to be an inconvenience. He has done so on many occassions in the past and has had his way. So what makes it any different this time around?

Also, most of the angst directed against Musharaff seems to come from the non-military RAPE. What are they going to do? Topple Musharaff's military dictatorship from the comforts of their dining rooms? Soon they will realize how ineffectual they are and things will go back to as they were.

Maverick

Did you notice that when Musharraf apologied to GEO TV he said it was a conspiracy and someone was sabotaging him. Daily Time reported that our old friend Lt Gen (retd) Hamid Gul was also manhandled and prevented from attending a rally. So were a couple of Masood Azhar's brothers.

I'm done with popcorns. Pass me the Thums up.

Hi Anonymous,

It seems as if the alliances are shifting within the Pakistani elite, there is some talk of an alliance of Sindhis and Punjabis against Musharraf.

I would really like to see what Musharraf does to save face here. Every time around something like this happens I learn more about the way Pakistan works.

Nitin,

Yes yes, thums up is good.

The simplest thing at this point is to let this burn some more time until the Jihadis get ideas and the Islamists are drawn out into the open.

Then Amereeka Bahadur will automatically run to Musharraf's rescue.

Ofcourse if you let it go for very long then you end up like Mohammed Reza Pehlavi.

Maverick,

On the face of it, I can not see any shifting alliances among the various biradaris that is directed against Musharaff. Disposing off a mere civilian judge, even the Chief Justice, is not enought to trigger something like that.

The whole things seems blown completely out of proportion. The lawyers were the one to initially start the protests and then everyone with an axe to grind against Musharaff jumped onto the bandwagon sensing a good PR opportunity. Unfortunately, I do not see enough substance in the issue for the protests to continue for any extended duration of time. Things will fizzle out.

Hi Anonymous,

Here is how I see it.

If there is a little bit of show and tell then Musharraf looks like he is in "big trouble" and the situation looks like it could easily "bleed out of control". Then everyone who is getting ideas about pushing Musharraf around in the American parliament will have to think twice before they ask for too much.

If there is a little too much show and tell, then the idea that Musharraf is a perishable quantity really goes around in Pakistan and then all sorts of people come out of the woodwork with their beards and kufi caps waving in the wind, and the situation really bleeds out of control very rapidly, perhaps even beyond the ability to control.

The latter is possible, but I am not seeing the signs of it happening right now.

Ofcourse the untutored eye will think that Musharraf actually had the Great Islamic Generalissimo Hamid "Khalid Ibn Walid" Gul beated up but those of us who know... well we know... I am thoroughly amused to find the Great General Gul put to grief by the Punjab Police, what days have come, when Gul has to take a physical beating to keep Musharraf in power.

Bahut badhiya entertainment hain.

Hi,

Crocker leaves as if there is nothing really going on.

This Mush-Tush drama has been scripted with Amereeka Bahadur's assistance?

Hi,

Latest entry into this farce. Reports of CIA searches to find Musharraf's successor.

Are the reports real? or are they plants to suss out whoever thinks he is next in line?

How does Musharraf know which way it will go?

The RAPE are milking this crisis for what it is worth.
